Michelin House
Refurbishment
and Extension
Client: Michelin House Development
Architect: Conran Roche and YRM Architects and Planners
This prestigious project consists of the restoration and extension of
the grade II listed building which was completed in 1911.
The existing frame was not able to carry the extra loads from the two
floors added in the restoration and therefore a new steel frame was inserted
into the fabric, supported by columns which pass through the existing
floors, receiving only lateral support from them.
Below the basement, bridging beams transfer these column loads to new
foundations, which are separate from the existing fully stressed foundations.
To minimise the impact of the new floors, lightweight steel construction
was used.
The upper levels are given over to offices (for the publishers, Paul
Hamlyn) while the basement and ground floor contain a Conran Shop. The
Bibendum Restaurant and Oyster Bar complete the development.
